Cross-border e-commerce in Europe was valued at 179.4 billion euros in 2022, up 4.8 percent from 171.2 billion euros in 2021 and slightly lower than last year’s 5 percent growth, according to Cross-border Business Europe. In addition, cross-border turnover of European online stores reached a record €105.5 billion, 5.5% more than in 2021.
In 2021, it was the same, with Germany having the largest European cross-border market at €34 billion (up 5% on the previous year). In the UK, cross-border sales fell 4 per cent to €28bn. According to the data report, a significant decline in UK retailers (34%) can be seen in the top 500 cross-border retailers. And 41 percent of sellers were from outside the EU, accounting for 74 billion euros in sales.
In addition, the value of cross-border turnover generated through e-commerce platforms was 24.7 billion euros (an increase of 22% compared to 2021), and the number of platforms increased from 42 to 49. The top-selling cross-border product categories were fashion apparel, jewelry and baby products, with a combined share of 39 percent. This was followed by home, garden and DIY tools.
